A striking example of Dutch postmodern design, this original TM40 dining table with four FM80 dining chairs was designed by Pierre Mazairac & Karel Boonzaaijer for Pastoe during the 1980s. Celebrated for their architectural approach to furniture design, the duo created a collection that perfectly balances geometric precision, functional simplicity and timeless elegance.

The set is defined by its crisp white steel construction and beautifully proportioned square table with softly rounded corners. The generous 121 × 121 cm tabletop comfortably accommodates four diners while maintaining an airy, sculptural appearance thanks to its refined central base. The clean architectural lines allow the design to feel both minimal and inviting.

The accompanying FM80 chairs perfectly complement the table. Their cantilever-inspired steel frames are softened by elegantly curved grey laminated wooden armrests, while the original lavender upholstery introduces a subtle yet sophisticated contrast. Generously padded seats and backrests ensure exceptional comfort, making the set equally suited for long dinners, creative workspaces or contemporary meeting environments.

More than four decades after its introduction, the TM40 and FM80 remain remarkably current. Their restrained aesthetic allows the set to integrate effortlessly into a wide range of interiors—from modernist architecture and minimalist homes to eclectic contemporary spaces. As with many iconic Pastoe designs, its strength lies in the harmony between proportion, material and craftsmanship.

Condition

The set is in good vintage condition, consistent with its age and use. The table has been carefully preserved and shows only a few minor surface scratches, having largely been protected by a tablecloth throughout its life. One small mark is present on the edge of the tabletop. The original upholstery displays slight, even discoloration, while the grey laminated wooden armrests show light signs of wear appropriate for age. Structurally, both the table and chairs remain excellent.
