Tjerk Reijenga Coat Rack "Toonladder" for Pilastro, The Netherlands, 1950s

A striking and highly functional wall-mounted coat rack designed by Tjerk Reijenga for Pilastro in the Netherlands during the 1950s.

Reijenga is celebrated for his innovative use of slender steel structures and modular systems, which became characteristic of progressive Dutch post-war design. This coat rack is a particularly graphic example of his work, combining an architectural black metal framework with a series of playful red, yellow, white and black metal hooks.

The strong linear construction creates an almost abstract composition on the wall, while the contrasting primary-coloured hooks give the piece its unmistakable mid-century character. A shallow upper shelf provides additional storage for hats, bags or accessories without compromising the light and open appearance of the design.

At 150 cm high, this is an unusually substantial and visually impressive piece, functioning as both a practical coat rack and a sculptural wall object. Its restrained steel construction and colourful detailing make it particularly suited to both contemporary interiors and collections of important Dutch modernist design.

A wonderful example of 1950s Dutch functionalism, combining simplicity, functionality and playful graphic expression.
